Saranac Ironwood and Gum Stained Cherry Chair
By Reid Crosby
This chair represents 10-12 years of chair building evolution. Grace, beauty, and function are my goals. The use of the most unique raw material, ironwood (peeled or natural), and totally “over the top” gum stained cherry (one of my most difficult hardwoods to find here), make this chair a show stopper. This chair was sold to a wonderful rustic furniture collector from the Adirondacks. As it happened as he was wrestling with the purchase, author/ rustic pundit Dan Mack happened by, asking him how much?, and after a very nice critique of my craftsmanship/ aesthetic, he told the man “you need to buy that chair”. I say “wrestling”, because he was under specific instructions “no more chairs” from his wife. He took it home and he didn’t get in trouble.
